How we rate

Four statuses, one rule: rate the evidence, not the pitch.

Each entry gets a status for how proven it is in businesses of 5 to 100 people, and a separate rating for how strong the evidence behind that status is.

Evidence strength

StrongSeveral independent studies or large independent surveys.
ModerateAt least one independent study or credible survey, plus consistent case evidence.
ThinA handful of independent data points.
Vendor claimsOnly what sellers publish about their own products.

How an entry is made

Each entry is drafted from public sources: academic studies, regulators, independent surveys and reputable reporting. Every figure carries a numbered citation you can open. Anything a vendor says about its own product is labelled as a vendor claim.

Review and updates

Every source in this edition was opened and checked against the text in October 2026. Each entry is then signed off by a named operator and re-checked when the evidence moves. Until that sign-off, the entry is marked as a draft at the top of the page.

Key takeaway

AI makes posts faster to write, but we found no independent study showing it brings small firms more revenue or enquiries. In an MIT experiment published in Science, 453 professionals, including marketers, cut task time by 40% with ChatGPT and raised rated quality by 18%. That is an output gain, not a sales gain. Machine-assisted text is widespread, 76% of US adults say it matters to know when content is AI-made, and labelled AI content can lose credibility. Treat it as a time-saver, then measure.

What is AI-written social content?

AI-written social content means using a general chatbot, or the assistant built into a scheduling tool, to draft posts for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok or X. A typical owner types a brief such as 'three posts announcing our winter menu' and gets captions, hashtags and a posting calendar in seconds.

Generative AI is now common in smaller firms. In a 2024 OECD survey of more than 5,000 small and medium firms in seven countries, including the UK, 31% were using it. A US Chamber of Commerce survey reported that 58% of US small businesses use generative AI, up from 23% in 2023. Neither figure is specific to social posts.

The question this entry answers is not whether AI can write a post. It clearly can. The question is whether those posts change anything an owner can count: enquiries, bookings, orders or repeat custom.

How does it work?

A large language model predicts plausible text from your prompt. It does not know your stock levels, prices, opening hours or what sold last month unless you paste that in. Most owners use it in one of two ways:

  • A general chatbot, where you write a prompt and copy the result into each platform.
  • An assistant inside a scheduling tool, which drafts, rewrites and resizes posts for each channel before queuing them.

The output is fluent and fast. In one controlled study, professionals using ChatGPT for writing tasks finished 40% faster. The catch is that fluency is now cheap for everyone. Researchers estimated that by 2024 up to 24% of corporate press release text was written with model assistance. An AI-detection vendor, which has an interest in the answer, classified 81% of a sample of 5,000 long LinkedIn posts from July 2026 as likely AI-written.

What it needs to work

To know whether AI posts do anything, you need enquiry or sales data you can line up against posting dates, and a reliable fact sheet so the AI is not guessing.

  1. A one-page brand voice guide with five to ten example posts you consider good
  2. A current product, price and opening-hours fact sheet in a shared Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 folder, updated whenever prices change
  3. At least six months of past posts with reach, clicks and messages, exported from each platform into one spreadsheet
  4. Weekly enquiries, bookings or online orders for the same six months from your shop, CRM or booking system, so you can compare periods
  5. A named person who reads and approves every post before it goes live

Most use cases in this guide succeed or fail here, on the data underneath them, before any AI is involved.

What does the evidence show?

The independent evidence is good on speed and weak on outcomes.

  • Speed and polish: in an experiment published in Science with 453 professionals, including marketers, ChatGPT cut task time by 40% and raised blind-rated quality by 18%.
  • Volume: on a large art-sharing platform, creators who adopted AI image tools produced about 25% more work and their favourites per view rose by 50%, but average novelty declined over time. That is art, not business marketing.
  • Persuasion in the lab: a peer-reviewed study found AI-written product stories often matched or beat human experts on stated purchase intention, though the AI also invented false product details.
  • Disclosure: in an unpublished, pre-registered experiment with 1,500 US adults, labelling public-health posts on social media as AI-made lowered perceived credibility and trust.

What we did not find: any independent study showing that AI-written social posts raise sales, enquiries or repeat custom for businesses of 5 to 100 staff.

Status and evidence

StatusCosmetic
Evidence strengthThin

We rate this cosmetic: the independent evidence shows AI raises the speed of writing and the volume of creative output, not revenue, cost or cash. We found no independent study linking AI-written posts to small-business sales. Evidence is thin: one strong experiment on drafting speed, a platform study outside marketing, and lab studies on persuasion and disclosure.

Where does it go wrong?

  • Wrong facts in public. The model fills gaps with plausible detail. Researchers caught ChatGPT inventing product details. For a small firm that means a wrong price, a discontinued special or a promise you cannot keep, posted under your name.
  • Sameness. When everyone uses the same tools, posts converge. Average novelty fell among AI adopters in the art-platform study, and a large share of some feeds already appears machine-written.
  • Credibility loss if found out. 76% of US adults say it matters to know whether content is AI-made, and 53% are not confident they can tell. Labelled AI posts lost credibility in testing.
  • Platform labels. Meta may add an 'AI info' label to organic images and video it detects as AI-generated.
  • Volume without measurement. Posting three times as often feels productive. If nobody checks enquiries, bookings or repeat orders against posting volume, you have bought activity, not results.

Frequently asked questions

How much does AI social media content cost for a small business?

The software is cheap. Buffer's free plan includes its AI assistant and paid plans start at US$5 per channel per month; ChatGPT Plus costs US$20 per month (vendor list prices, checked Oct 2026). The real cost is staff time spent editing, fact-checking and approving posts, plus the risk of posting more without checking whether it brings in enquiries.

Do I need a developer or IT team to use AI for social media posts?

No. The tools run in a browser and need no integration. What you need is a clear brief, a current fact sheet with products and prices, and someone who approves every post. If you later want AI to pull live stock or prices into posts automatically, that means connecting systems, which is a bigger job.

Should I tell customers my social posts are written with AI?

If you disclose, do it upfront, because audiences care: 76% of US adults say it matters to know whether content is AI-made. In one experiment, an AI label lowered credibility, and finding out afterwards hurt trust far more than being told upfront. Meta may label AI images itself. Either way, keep a person responsible for every post.

Does AI-generated content hurt engagement or reach on social media?

We found no independent study measuring this for business pages. On an art platform, AI adopters gained favourites per view, while in a separate experiment AI labels reduced credibility. The honest answer is that it depends on quality and on whether readers notice. Track enquiries and orders rather than likes.

Can AI write social posts that actually sell?

In one peer-reviewed study, AI-written product stories often matched or beat expert copy on stated purchase intention, but stated intention is not money in the till. We found no independent study showing AI social posts raise small-business sales. Test it yourself: run AI and human posts for the same products over the same weeks and compare enquiries.
